External Problem Solving
It’s no secret that everyone will experience times when they are faced with an obstacle that they may need help to overcome. When we see someone going through one of those times, it’s natural to want to reach out and lend a helping hand, but it can be difficult to know where to start! Well, external problem-solving is a skill that can be used to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Today, we’ll explore how to use this skill set to help others by incorporating 3 effective strategies into our problem-solving toolbox that we’ve been building this month. By working with others, considering available resources, and evaluating effectiveness, we can identify and implement effective solutions to problems facing our communities.
Collaborate With Others
Collaboration is essential when it comes to external problem-solving. To effectively solve problems in the community, it is important to work well with others who can contribute to the development and implementation of solutions. That means we have to be good team players for people who are involved, but especially the person or people whose problem we are helping to solve. When it comes to finding solutions, remember to keep an open mind when working with others, because collaboration allows for a diversity of ideas and perspectives, which can help to identify solutions that are more effective and sustainable. Additionally, it helps to strengthen the bonds between members of the community.

Consider Available Resources
Another important aspect of using external problem-solving to help others is considering the resources that are available. Resources can include financial resources, professional resources, additional contributors, and other necessary materials. In order to “consider” the resources, start by creating a list of all the different things you will (definitely and/or potentially) need to combat the issue. Then, think about how they can be used to achieve the desired outcome.
However, when considering available resources, it is also important to identify potential barriers and ways to overcome them. The fact is, some resources can be scarce, which means that there may not be a whole lot of it. Be sure to weigh out the “supply” of each resource, and how much of it is readily available for you to use. Additionally, other resources may come at a price. For example, if your potential solution includes the help of a professional, make sure you have what you need to compensate them, if necessary. Identifying potential roadblocks and how to overcome them in advance will take you one step closer to finding an appropriate solution, while further developing your problem solving skills!

Evaluate the Effectiveness
The final step is evaluating the effectiveness of the developed solution. This involves monitoring progress and outcomes to determine whether it is achieving its intended goals. This is a process that happens over time, since evaluation helps to ensure that the solution is effective and sustainable over the long term. With that in mind, patience is key when it comes to this part of external problem solving. If the problem you are addressing is community-wide, or belongs to someone else entirely, it can take longer to see tangible results. Don’t give up on a solution if it doesn’t work right away!
Evaluation can take many forms, such as tracking data, measuring outcomes, or asking for feedback from the community. The kinds of measurements you should make will depend on the nature of the problem and solution. No matter how you go about determining the solution’s effectiveness, it is important to establish clear evaluation criteria and measure progress regularly. If the data shows that the fix is effective at addressing and overcoming the problem, then keep it up and fully implement. If it seems as though it isn’t working, then it’s time to go back to the drawing board and try again!

In Our Classes…
This week, we will spend time in our classes each day to focus on how to use these 3 steps to solve problems externally. Our classes themselves offer our students a unique community full of other awesome karate kids, supervised by our amazing team of instructors! In our class environment, students will be able to safely practice their external problem solving skills in order to help them implement this process into their daily lives. Our goal this week is to help all of our students learn how to help others in the community to overcome their challenges.
Conclusion
In conclusion, using external problem-solving to help others in the community can be a powerful and transformative experience. By collaborating with others, considering available resources, and evaluating effectiveness, individuals can develop and implement effective solutions to address pressing community issues. By applying external problem-solving skills, individuals can make a significant difference in the lives of others and create a better future for their community. So let’s continue to work together to solve problems and create positive change, together!
